Attention Caregivers – This is Your Month for Self-Care

September is Self-Care Awareness Month—caregivers can recharge with support from senior home care, ensuring loved ones are cared for while they rest and refresh.

If you are a caregiver of an elderly loved one, self-care often falls to the bottom of your list of things to do, and even when it eventually makes its way to the top of the list, you push it back down to the bottom because you have too much to do. You are not alone, and senior home care can help.

Caregivers often have huge plates, stacked high with responsibilities that involve everyone else but themselves. The thought of self-care hardly crosses their minds.

September is Self-Care Awareness Month

If you also have children in addition to caring for your elderly loved one, you might chuckle that the busiest month of the year is self-care awareness month, but it is a great time to start the practice of self-care.

September often marks the return to schedules and good habits, so why not add self-care to that list? You’ll not only receive the benefits from a little self-care, but those you care for will also benefit when you take some time to care for yourself.

The Health Benefits of Self-Care

Self-care doesn’t mean being self-indulgent and forgetting completely about the needs of others. Self-care means making your own needs just as important and trying to fulfill your needs while taking care of others.

Self-care can have some amazing health benefits as well when practiced regularly. Those health benefits can include reduced stress, lowered blood pressure, boosted self-esteem, better sleep, improved relationships, and, simply, more joy.

Five Forms of Self-Care

Only you know what type of self-care is best for you, so spend a bit of time beforehand thinking about what activity (or lack of activity) provides that boost of joy you need.

If you’re stuck because it’s been so long since you’ve done any self-care, consider these five activities to draw inspiration from.

  1. Emotional Self-Care: This can look as structured as visiting your therapist again, or it can be as simple as doing some regular meditation in a garden or spending time playing with your dog or cat.
  2. Social Self-Care: Many caregivers lose touch with those friends, family, and clubs that used to be a big part of their identity. It might be time to start back to going out to girls’ night or rejoin that bowling league.
  3. Physical Self-Care: Caregiving can be physically exhausting, and it might seem like torture to incorporate physical self-care back into your schedule, but being physically active, doing something you love, will provide you with more energy instead of robbing you of energy. Think about long walks, swims, or whatever gives you peace while you exercise.
  4. Mental Self-Care: Keep your brain sharp and engaged by learning something new, like taking a pottery class.
  5. Spiritual Self-Care: If you are a spiritual person, you can benefit from reconnecting with your spiritual community.

Finding Time with Help from Senior Home Care

In order to find time for self-care, that means you might need to ask for help with some of your responsibilities. As a caregiver of an elderly loved one, you might need some help with their senior home care. A team that provides senior home care assistance can step in and help with household chores, socialize with your senior, or even provide transportation.

Senior home care providers offer reliable, consistent assistance so you can take the time needed to care for yourself, knowing your loved one is in good hands.
