Summer Caregiving Tips for AmanaCare Caregivers

Summer in Nebraska can be great—but it also brings high temps and unique caregiving challenges. At AmanaCare, we know your role isn’t easy, and we’re here to support you through it. Whether you’re a seasoned caregiver or new to the job, these caregiving tips can help you navigate the heat, stay safe, and keep clients (and their pets!) engaged and comfortable.

Tips to Beat the Heat (for Clients and Caregivers)

1. Beverages Matter More Than You Think

Water is important—but did you know what you drink matters, too? For seniors who resist plain water, try:

  • Cucumber or citrus-infused water
  • Cold herbal teas (like peppermint or chamomile)
  • Water-rich snacks like frozen watermelon, cucumbers, or popsicles made with real fruit juice

2. Swap Afternoon Walks for Morning Window Time

Avoid the afternoon heat by encouraging morning light exposure. Open blinds or sit near a window for a light dose of vitamin D, which supports mood and sleep. Then save physical movement for inside—chair yoga, hallway walks, or sorting through household items.

3. Skip the Blanket—Try a Summer Shawl

Many seniors still feel cold in air conditioning. Instead of piling on heavy blankets, use light shawls or cotton wraps. Breathable, cozy, and easier to wash, too.

4. Cool Down the House Without Turning Up the AC

Offer help with small adjustments like:

  • Closing blinds mid-day
  • Using a box fan and a bowl of ice for a DIY cooling system
  • Cooking meals early in the day to reduce evening heat buildup
(Avoid using the oven after 3pm if possible!)

5. Look Out for “Hidden Heat” in Medications

Some medications increase sun sensitivity or risk of dehydration. Watch for fatigue, confusion, or skin changes—especially after outdoor time—and contact your Care Coordinator if you notice anything unusual.

Don’t Forget the Pets: Hot Weather Tips for Furry Friends

Many of our clients have pets they love—and keeping them safe in summer is part of quality care.

  • Paws on Pavement: If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws. Avoid walking pets on concrete during peak heat.
  • Shade & Water: Always make sure outdoor pets have access to shade and fresh water. Bring water along on walks if needed.
  • Know the Signs: Heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, or vomiting can be signs of heatstroke. Never leave pets in vehicles.
  • Brush, Don’t Shave: For many breeds, brushing helps remove excess fur and prevent overheating—but shaving can actually expose them to more sun risk.

If you’re caring for a client with a pet and have questions, don’t hesitate to ask the Care Coordinator for guidance.

Creative Ideas for Hot Days With Clients

When it’s too hot to go outside, try these indoor-friendly ways to engage:

• Independence Day Card Making
Create cards for Veterans, grandkids, or neighbors using stickers, stamps, or colored paper.

• Frozen Fruit “Tastings”
Chilled mango, pineapple, or berries can make a simple and hydrating activity.

• Porch Time with a Purpose
In shady spots, set up light tasks like looking through photos, scrapbooking, or watching funny YouTube videos on the laptop with a fan and a cool drink.
