At AmanaCare, we believe in equipping families with resources that provide not only care but also compassion, understanding, and hope—especially in life’s most challenging seasons. That’s why we’re honored to spotlight the work of fellow Nebraskan and Omaha-based social worker and therapist, Mindy Crouch, who is making an incredible impact on families dealing with dementia and grief.

Mindy serves the Omaha community as a mental health therapist with Pando Geriatric Counseling and is also the co-creator of ElderConnect, a local hub of senior care resources in the Omaha area. Her commitment to the emotional well-being of Nebraska families led her to author two remarkable activity books that are now available on Amazon.

Understanding Dementia: An Interactive Learn-and-Earn Activity Book

Helping Children Be Mad at Dementia—and Love Their Loved Ones

Dementia affects the entire family, including the youngest members. Mindy’s book, Understanding Dementia, is a one-of-a-kind workbook that introduces children to the realities of dementia in an age-appropriate and interactive way.

Through 12 engaging “Learn-and-Earn” chapters, kids can explore:

  • What dementia is and how it progresses
  • How their loved one might change over time
  • Healthy ways to process emotions like anger, sadness, and confusion
  • Activities such as journaling, drawing, and games to make sense of what’s happening

Each chapter helps children earn a badge, creating a sense of accomplishment while guiding them to better understand, communicate with, and love their family member through each stage of the disease.

This book is especially helpful for families in Omaha navigating dementia diagnoses, whether through in-home care, assisted living, or support from community partners like AmanaCare.

The 4 Bridges of Grief: An Interactive Learn-and-Earn Activity Book

Helping Kids Cross the Scary Hole Left by Loss

Grief is a complicated emotion for anyone—especially children. In her second book, The 4 Bridges of Grief, Mindy introduces a groundbreaking new framework to help children process the loss of a loved one.

This interactive workbook walks kids through “The 4 Bridges of Grief”:

  1. The 3-Rope Bridge – fragile and uncertain
  2. The Glass Bridge – clear but still vulnerable
  3. The Wooden Bridge – stronger, but still emotional
  4. The Steel Bridge – stable, confident, and full of love

Each of the 12 chapters includes exercises and journal prompts to help kids understand emotions, practice coping techniques, and celebrate cherished memories through a “memory capsule.” Like her dementia workbook, children earn badges as they progress—building resilience while honoring their grief journey.

This is an incredibly valuable tool for Omaha families working through loss, especially for children impacted by the passing of a grandparent or loved one receiving in-home hospice or palliative care.
