At AmanaCare, we proudly support the veterans in our communities, providing compassionate in-home care that honors their sacrifices and service. My name is Heather, and I’m the Sales & Marketing Director at AmanaCare. Today, I want to take a moment to share a personal story about someone who shaped my life and exemplified the spirit of service—my grandfather, Ted Manzer.

A Hero in the Skies

My grandpa, Ted Manzer, wasn’t just my grandfather—he was a national hero and a source of unwavering inspiration. His story is one of courage, dedication, and a commitment to making life better for those around him.

During World War II, Ted didn’t hesitate to volunteer for service. His fascination with flight led him to enlist in the Army Air Corps, where he trained as a fighter pilot. He was assigned to the 49th Fighter Group and spent a year and a half flying P-38s in the Pacific. His bravery earned him three confirmed aerial victories, combat stars for all four of America’s major Pacific campaigns, and the Bronze Star for valor.

One of his most remarkable stories took place during the historic day when the peace treaty was signed on the USS Missouri, officially ending the war in the Pacific. Grandpa was flying cover over the ship, safeguarding a moment that marked the end of conflict.

Triumph Over Adversity

Grandpa’s story wasn’t without hardship. One fateful day, he was shot down from his plane. Miraculously, he survived the crash and spent days aboard a submarine, evading danger. As he later put it, “It was either that, or get eaten by sharks.”

Growing up in Atkinson, Nebraska, Grandpa would visit my classroom every year to share his experiences. Although I’m sure he downplayed the details of that harrowing day, we were all captivated, sitting in awe of the man who had truly lived through history.

Grandpa’s service didn’t end when the war did. After returning home, he continued to serve his community as a lineman for NPPD, helping keep Nebraska powered. He also became renowned as a gunsmith, crafting rifles with such exceptional quality that anyone fortunate enough to own a “Ted Manzer rifle” knew they had something special. One of my personal favorites is the .257 Roberts rifle with a stainless steel barrel—a masterpiece from his skilled hands!

A Legacy of Service

Ted Manzer passed away in 2019, but his legacy lives on. He wasn’t just a hero for what he did during the war—he was a hero because of how he lived his life afterward. He carried his sense of duty and commitment into everything he did, from maintaining the power grid to creating works of art in his gunsmithing shop. Like so many veterans, he embodied the spirit of service long after his military days were over.

Today, our world feels a little emptier without heroes like my grandfather. But his story reminds me every day of why we at AmanaCare are committed to serving veterans. They have given so much to protect our freedom and our way of life, and now it’s our turn to give back.
