The Omaha Office in Action: Supporting Clients, Caregivers, and Each Other

AmanaCare Omaha: Supporting Clients, Caregivers & Community

At AmanaCare, care doesn’t only happen in our clients’ homes. It happens in our offices, in our conversations, in our prayers, and in the way we support both our caregivers and the families we serve. The Omaha office is a great example of how our team works behind the scenes to support the whole person — clients, caregivers, and each other.

Caring for Clients Who Experience Anxiety

Many of the individuals we serve experience anxiety for a variety of reasons. Changes in health, loss of independence, memory issues, grief, and life transitions can all cause stress and anxious feelings. Our caregivers often become a calming and reassuring presence for clients who are feeling overwhelmed.

Some of our administrative team members listen to leadership, caregiving, and wellness podcasts, and recently, one message really stood out to us — especially in how it relates to caring for individuals who feel anxious.

It talked about how the part of the brain that processes anxiety — the amygdala — cannot operate in the same way when we focus on gratitude. In simple terms, you cannot be anxious and grateful at the same time.

This is something caregivers can use in real time when a client feels anxious or overwhelmed. A caregiver might gently guide a conversation like this:

  • “What is something you’re thankful for today?”
  • “What made you smile this week?”
  • “What is something you’re glad about right now?”
  • “What is a good memory you have?”
  • “Who is someone you’re thankful for?”

Even something very simple can help redirect the mind:

  • I’m thankful I can take a deep breath.
  • I’m thankful for this sunny day.
  • I’m thankful for my family.
  • I’m thankful for this cup of coffee.
  • I’m thankful for my home.

When we shift into gratitude, our brains actually calm down, our heart rate slows, and we are able to think more clearly and make better decisions. It’s a simple but powerful way to help someone calm down and feel more in control.

Interestingly, this concept is also reflected in Scripture. The book of Philippians tells us:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” – Philippians 4:6

There is wisdom in that verse that aligns with how our minds were designed to work. Gratitude brings peace, clarity, and calm — something many of our clients truly need.

A Workplace That Prays for People

Another thing that makes AmanaCare unique is how much our team truly cares about people — not just as clients or coworkers, but as human beings with families, struggles, joys, and losses.

Within our internal communication system, we have a “Prayers” channel where team members can share prayer requests. Care coordinators and caregivers often interact closely with clients and families, and sometimes clients are going through very difficult situations — health issues, hospital stays, loss of loved ones, or other hardships.

It is very common for a caregiver or care coordinator to ask a client:
“Would it be okay if I asked our team to pray for you?”

If the client says yes, the team member will share the request in the prayers channel, and our staff begins responding with encouragement, support, and prayers.

We pray for:

  • Clients who are struggling with health issues
  • Families who have lost loved ones
  • Caregivers going through difficult times
  • Team members and their families
  • Surgeries and medical diagnoses
  • Babies being born
  • Marriages and relationships
  • And even pets, because pets are family too

When a longtime family pet passes away, we feel that loss alongside the family and our caregivers. Those prayer requests show up in the channel too, and our team surrounds each other with support.

This is one of the ways we live out our mission every day:

“We honor the God-given dignity of those we serve, lead, and work beside.”
