What’s New in North Platte? Creativity and a Whole Lot of Heart

AmanaCare North Platte: Community Events and Connections

There’s rarely a dull moment at AmanaCare North Platte! From community events and educational opportunities to fundraisers, creative gatherings and meaningful moments with clients, our North Platte team continues to find ways to show up for the people and organizations around us.

For AmanaCare, being part of a community means much more than simply providing home care within it. It means building relationships, supporting important causes, sharing resources and taking the time to genuinely connect with people. Here’s a look at some of what our North Platte team has been up to lately.

Starting Important Conversations

North Platte recently welcomed Mike Sciandra for two speaking opportunities focused on problem gambling.

Mike spoke to North Platte Noon Rotary and later joined a Wellness & Wisdom Wednesday event with Angels Care, adapting his presentation for each audience. His message highlighted an issue that can affect people at any age but can present particular concerns for older adults.

Retirement can bring significant changes in routine and social connection, and some older adults experience increased isolation or loneliness. Add the constant stream of scams, misleading advertisements and other messages competing for their attention, and it becomes especially important to have open conversations about gambling and financial well-being.

Bringing knowledgeable speakers like Mike to North Platte helps create opportunities for education and conversations about issues that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Crafting Connections—and Having a Little Fun

Community involvement doesn’t always have to be serious! Our recent Crafting Connections with AmanaCare gathering may have been smaller than anticipated due to a few participants recovering from surgery, but that certainly didn’t stop us from having fun.

Participants decorated glass jars with dried flowers, twine and candles to create beautiful centerpieces to take home. More importantly, they spent time together creating, visiting and enjoying one another’s company.

That’s exactly what Crafting Connections is meant to be: a simple opportunity for people to get out, connect and create something together.

Connecting at Project Connect

Amber Corbin represented AmanaCare at Project Connect in North Platte, hosted by the Early Development Network.

Community events like Project Connect give our team an opportunity to meet families, share information about the resources available through AmanaCare and, just as importantly, learn more about the other organizations serving people in our area.

We believe families benefit when community organizations know one another, understand the services available locally and can help connect people with the right resources when a need arises.

Going Purple for a Purpose

The North Platte office also recently hosted Purple for a Purpose, a fundraiser benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association.

And, in true AmanaCare fashion, we decided fundraising should be fun! The event featured a dirty soda bar, cookies and a purple prize pull filled with goodies donated or gathered for the occasion. Community members stopped in to enjoy a treat, connect with our team and support a cause that is especially meaningful to those of us who work with older adults and families.

Supporting individuals living with dementia—and the family members and caregivers walking alongside them—is an important part of what we do. Purple for a Purpose gave us another way to turn that passion into action.

Looking Beyond the Care Plan

Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen during an ordinary client visit.

Recently, Ashley Huffman, Care Coordinator in North Platte, stopped by to check in with one of her clients. He was having a difficult day, but there was still something he was excited to share.

He proudly showed Ashley a poster featuring Charlie, one of his original illustrations, as well as two impressive space-themed posters created from his own 3D designs.

It was a wonderful reminder that the people we serve are so much more than their care needs. They are artists, parents, grandparents, professionals, storytellers, creators and individuals with talents and experiences worth knowing.

Even on difficult days, creativity can provide comfort, accomplishment and joy. Taking the time to discover those pieces of someone’s life is one of the things that makes caregiving about much more than completing a list of tasks.

Finding Connections in Unexpected Places

For Heather Schanou, AmanaCare’s Director of Marketing, even a Saturday morning in North Platte recently turned into an opportunity for both a meaningful personal interaction and some unexpected networking.

Heather had the opportunity to meet former Husker volleyball player and current professional volleyball player Rebekah Allick, whose partnership with faith-based Dayspring Bank immediately sparked a connection. With AmanaCare also being a faith-based organization, Heather couldn’t resist introducing AmanaCare and even had an opportunity to speak with a Dayspring Bank executive about ways the organizations might connect.

Heather was able to tell Rebekah how much joy she brought Heather’s mother during the final weeks of her life—not only through the way she competed on the volleyball court, but through the person she showed herself to be off of it.

It was an emotional interaction and a reminder that we don’t always know the impact we’re having on someone else’s life.

North Platte Is Home

All of these moments may look very different—a resource fair, an Alzheimer’s fundraiser, a client visit, a community presentation, an afternoon craft and an unexpected Saturday morning conversation—but they’re connected by something important.

They’re about relationships.

AmanaCare North Platte doesn’t simply want to be a company that provides services in this community. We want to be part of the community—showing up, collaborating, learning, serving, celebrating and connecting with the people who make this area special.

There’s been plenty happening lately, and we’re excited for what’s next.

Because when someone asks, “What’s new in North Platte?” there’s a pretty good chance the AmanaCare team has something to share. 💙
